Who we are: Know some of our choir members

  • Rachel Harrison

Picture of Rachel HarrisonI am originally from the UK where I studied music. After a few years in London working in Orchestral Management the call of the sea became strong and I spent the next few years yachting. During my time in the Pacific I ended up sailing to New Zealand where I decided to step ashore and have called New Zealand home for just over 9 years.

During my time at sea I missed my music, but my clarinet playing days were long gone. I decided I would give singing a try, even though I was a little nervous of my abilities, so I approached Auckland Choral. As soon as I attended my first rehearsal I realised this is what I had been missing and have been a member of Auckland Choral ever since. Auckland Choral became a family to me, and I passionately supported it by being on the Management Committee for several years until May 2016, including Convener of the Music Committee. I love my Wednesday night rehearsals and being able to perform magical works in fabulous venues with friends!

  • Kimberley Harris

Picture of Kimberley HarrisKimberley joined the choir as a Soprano in January 2015 for Handel's Israel in Egypt. It was a daunting, split choir piece with a short rehearsal period but this didn't scare her away! Kimberley has been singing since before she could talk, her first words were sung, being Old MacDonald's E-I-E-I-O. Kimberley joined the Auckland Girls Choir as a foundation member in 1998 under Leonie Lawson and found she enjoyed Choral Music but left in 2000 as a 13 year old and found enjoyment throughout her high-school years in musical stage performances and often performed singing solos at school assemblies and talent contests.

After high-school Kimberley got her first job as a Receptionist in a Print Brokers and has since grown in the industry and is now very happy in her latest role as a Customer Support specialising in Labels. Kimberley has a wonderful daughter Jayda and a very cool and cheeky son, Harris (don't worry! he has his Fathers surname!) who bring her much joy. She grew up in and still resides in the Howick/Pakuranga area. Kimberley also enjoys movies, crystals, philosophical conversations and Karaoke (of course!)

  • Aria Zhang

Picture of Aria ZhangSinging in choirs since I was at Fudan University in Shanghai, I have been regarding singing as one of the most important part of my life. Before I moved to Auckland, I searched online and found Auckland Choral. I told myself: that is the choir I want to join in!
Then here I am. Being an alto at Auckland Choral, I enjoy every rehearsal we have every Wednesday. I love our conductors and our music committee for their professional selection and interpretation of music works. I love our marketing committee for their enthusiasm and persistence in promoting our performance. Being a helper at the marketing committee, I engaged in campaigns at University campus and the Chinese Community. That is definitely what I want to do as a PhD student at The University of Auckland and as a new Chinese immigrant.
Music is a language to communicate with other people no matter which country we come from. Being a member of Auckland Choral, I have an even stronger feeling of integrating into this vibrant and diversified city—Auckland!
