A new day dawns for New Zealand….out of the shadow of COVID-19 and towards a bright new future.

Auckland Choral can’t wait to bring our community back as we present our first public concert after lockdown: “Light”.

From the resplendent energy of Jonathan Dove’s motet Vast Ocean of Light to the serenity and warmth of Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque, the concert explores various composers’ responses to light. Young composer Sarah Fouhy composed Stars I shall Find, expressing how we can find peace by looking up at the stars that shine every night.

Light of Lights Beholden is one of NZ composer Jenny McLeod’s Sun Festival Carols, and  David Hamilton’s A Blessing of Light draws on Celtic texts.

We welcome organist Philip Smith to accompany the choir and feature the organ toccata Fiat Lux by DuBois, and to end the concert, our Alumni join the choir for Handel’s exhilarating and joyful Zadok the Priest.

Auckland Choral 100th Hallelujahs Documentary

Watch the full documentary of about Auckland Choral's 100th consecutive performance of Handel's Messiah:

Who we are: Get to know some of our choir members

  • Rosemarie Brown

Picture of Rosemarie BrownI think I’ve been singing my entire life and life without singing is a little empty. I’ve sung in choirs since Primary School and with churches. I’ve sung in bands, concerts and on stage. Nowadays I sing in operas,  concerts, and for the last few years with Auckland Choral. I have sung in the US, Canada, with Symphony orchestras in Australia and New Zealand, with opera companies in Australia and New Zealand. There is nothing more magical, inspiring, uplifting and energising than when you are making absolutely beautiful music with the entire team of musicians and giving enjoyment to many, to transport the listeners into their own world of music and fantasy.  For those times where I resonate with the words, the composer or story – then words cannot express that amazingness, but music can!  I have chills by the time I am finished Handel’s Messiah and that is my icing on the cake every year thanks to Auckland Choral.

  • Becky O'Gram

Picture of Becky O'GramMy earliest memories of singing were car songs, where my sisters and I were squashed in the back of the car while my mother lead the chorus from the front. I started singing in small groups and choirs at age 12 for church events and friends' weddings. I've been a member of some form of choir ever since and now count myself very lucky to be a member of Auckland Choral. I joined in January 2017, with my first concert being the huge St John Passion by Bach. We performed it at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, in German! Singing out that first loud "Herr" gave me goose bumps and was an unforgettable experience. In December that year I got to perform in the Messiah for the first time and hope to do the same every Christmas for a long time to come.

  • Lisa Er

Picture of Lisa ErLisa has been in the choir since 1974 with the exception of a couple of years when she was busy with small children.
Born in the UK Lisa emigrated with her parents to New Zealand at the age of 16. Already politically active Lisa has continued to have a passionate interest in peace, politics, ethics and philosophy, as well as a deep love of music.
A primary school teacher for 14 years, Lisa then created the business Lisa's Hummus, which she sold a few years ago. Now Lisa is immersed in creating political solutions via The Awareness Party, and  will continue singing in the choir as long as she is able!
