Support Auckland Choral

The fallout from COVID-19 has hit the arts sector particularly heavily, with concerts worldwide cancelled: artists, groups and venues left without any certainty as to their future. For the first time since the influenza epidemic of 1918 (which caused the cancellation of our Elijah & Messiah concerts) we too were forced to cancel our last concert, Haydn’s The Seasons - at significant financial cost.

Now, more than ever, we are seeking donations, gifts in kind, sponsorships and bequests to ensure Auckland Choral can continue its day-to-day operations and performances in the future.

Auckland Choral is Auckland’s symphonic choir. For its concert series in 2020, it is offering two awards for student compositions - one for secondary school and one for tertiary age students. A prize in each category is offered for the best work, as selected by an adjudicator nominated by the choir’s management committee. The choir will schedule the winning works during 2020.

Competition regulations

1. The work should be written for a symphonic choir (around 100 voices).

2. The work will be for SATB choir (with limited divisi of parts) and organ. Vocal ranges should be suitable for a choir consisting largely of community singers.

3. The duration of the work will be no more than 5 minutes.

4. The work should use a text by a NZ poet or writer. The text should be related to NZ nature, or history, or a specific place in our country. Obtaining copyright permission for the text is the responsibility of the composer.

5. The score should be laid out using conventional choral formatting. Care should be taken with word underlay. In the case of the winning work, the submitted score should be ready for duplication. Composers grant the choir permission to make further copies for performance at no additional fee. 

6. Submitted works should not have been performed or published previously.

7. Copyright on the music is retained by the composer. The composers of the winning works will allow Auckland Choral to present the premiere performance of the pieces. The winning composers will be expected to attend the premiere although no additional financial support is likely to be available for composers attending from outside Auckland.

8. Entries are to be submitted anonymously. The score should have a nom de plume in place of the composer’s name. The score will be submitted electronically (as a PDF file) with an accompanying email giving the title of the work, the nom de plume used on the score, and contact details. An audio file of a computer realisation (MP3 preferred) may also be included with the submission.

9. Composers must be a New Zealand citizen, or normally resident in New Zealand.

10. Two prizes are offered:

(i) one prize of $500 for students currently (2019) enrolled at a secondary school (or if home-schooled, of secondary school age)

(ii) one prize of $750 for tertiary age students with an upper age limit of 26 years as at 31 December 2019

11. The choir reserves the right to make no awards if scores do not reach a satisfactory standard.

12. Deadline for entries is 20 March 2020 (updated date).

Who we are: Get to know some of our choir members

  • Kimberley Harris

    Picture of Kimberley HarrisKimberley joined the choir as a Soprano in January 2015 for Handel's Israel in Egypt. It was a daunting, split choir piece with a short rehearsal period but this didn't scare her away! Kimberley has been singing since before she could talk, her first words were sung, being Old MacDonald's E-I-E-I-O. Kimberley joined the Auckland Girls Choir as a foundation member in 1998 under Leonie Lawson and found she enjoyed Choral Music but left in 2000 as a 13 year old and found enjoyment throughout her high-school years in musical stage performances and often performed singing solos at school assemblies and talent contests. 

    After high-school Kimberley got her first job as a Receptionist in a Print Brokers and has since grown in the industry and is now very happy in her latest role as a Customer Support specialising in Labels. Kimberley has a wonderful daughter Jayda and a very cool and cheeky son, Harris (don't worry! he has his Fathers surname!) who bring her much joy. She grew up in and still resides in the Howick/Pakuranga area. Kimberley also enjoys movies, crystals, philosophical conversations and Karaoke (of course!)

     
  • Alison Miller

    Picture of Alison MillerHi, I’m Alison Miller. I have been singing all my life, as both my parents had good voices, and we followed in their footsteps. I’ve sung in both church and community choirs, but when I was a pupil in the EGGS choir, we sang the third chorus part in St Matthew Passion in the Town Hall with Ray Wilson conducting and I was smitten. Years later when we returned to Auckland, and heard Auckland Choral singing Brubeck’s Light in the Wilderness in 1969, I knew I had to belong to this magnificent choir.. I joined in 1970 as a soprano 1, and have been a member since then, with the first concert being Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast, with 6 weeks rehearsal time.
    Various committee positions have kept me involved, and I was secretary (in those days - a very basic General Manager) for 7 years, before taking on the Librarian’s position. I was very proud to see our daughter Sandy join Choral while she was still at school, and when I joined the alto line I remember her moral support for me as a new alto. Auckland Choral is my life and the members are my music family, which I am very conscious of every time we perform on stage. Unfortunately I have had to take leave on several occasions because of ill health, but one positive to that is I’ve been in the audience to witness the choir’s great presentations from in front of the stage.

    Away from choir and family, I take a team of handbell ringers who meet each week in East Auckland.

     
  • Marion Hammond

    Picture of Marion HammondMarion has been a member of Auckland Choral since 2008 and has recently become both a trustee and the Treasurer of the Foundation. She is responsible for all the financial transactions undertaken by the Foundation and prepares the year end accounts and reporting requirements required by the Charities Services. She also works closely with the Auckland Foundation with whom we have a partnership and together are working hard to fund choral singing in Auckland and New Zealand.
    Professionally working as an accountant for a property management firm Marion also utilises her skills as Treasurer for the Auckland Dragon Boat Association, a role she has held for over nine years. Her background also includes volunteering for Amateur Theatre Companies in production and management roles which have furthered her knowledge of voluntary organisations.
